About M2048
M2048 is a free website for playing 2048 against other people. It started from a simple question: 2048 is almost always played alone, so what happens when two players play together?
What you can play
There are two games on M2048.
- 2048, the sliding-tile puzzle you may already know. You can play it alone, or head to head: two players on one board, taking turns, each scoring their own merges, with a clock each as in chess. How to play explains the rules.
- EX-2048, a card game of our own design built on a 3 by 3 board. Instead of tiles appearing at random, players place them with cards, pay for moves with cards, and build their decks from a shop that changes every game. The EX-2048 guide covers it in full.
Both games can be played ranked, with ratings for each time control, or unranked, in private rooms with a friend, in tournaments, or against practice bots. Game modes describes each one.
Fair play
Every game against another player is decided on our server, not in either player's browser. Moves are checked there, the random tiles in 2048 are placed there, and the clocks are kept there, so a player cannot give themselves a better tile or more time by tampering with the page. Ranked ratings only change after a finished game between two real players; games against bots and games in private rooms never affect them.
Recent multiplayer games can be replayed move by move from either player's side, which makes it easy to look back at how a game was won or lost.
Playing without an account
You can start playing straight away as a guest, with no email address or password. Guests can play the single-player modes, unranked games, private rooms and bots. Ranked play, tournaments and friends need a free registered account, because a guest account lives in your browser and cannot be recovered if its data is cleared.
How M2048 is paid for
M2048 is free to play. Running the servers is paid for in two ways: advertising, which is shown only if you accept it in the cookie banner, and an optional supporter plan for players who want to help keep the site going. Supporters see no ads and get a few extras: a badge on their profile, the ability to change their username, extra single-player modes, more practice bots, and room to join more tournaments at once. Nothing can be bought that gives an advantage in a game against another player.
Your data
We collect what the game needs to work: your account details, your games and ratings, and the technical information every website receives. We do not sell it. The privacy policy lists exactly what is collected and who else sees it, and the terms of service set out the rules for using the site.
